to Groom For Academic Excellence in Mathematics through the Accelerated Summer
Mathematics Academy (ASMA)
SAN GABRIEL VALLEY/INLAND EMPIRE - March 17th, 2008 - The Legacy Roundtable, a cadre of
collegiate, corporate and community parners, is curently recruiting African American male paricipants for the
2008 Accelerated Sumer Mathematics Academy (ASMA). Students must be in good academic standing (2.0
or higher) and be enrolled in geometry level mathematics at their school. All participation costs are covered by
Legacy.
ASMA classes wil be held at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California and Chaffey College in Fontana,
California. Program scholars wil enroll in regular Intermediate Algebra courses taught by Mt. San Antonio
College instructors. A two week intensive mathematics review will be provided to help scholars on the
mandatory mathematics placement exam followed by 6 weeks of instruction. Classes will be held Monday
through Thursday beginning June 23rd and ending on July 31st.
ASMA scholars will benefit from cultually based field trips and college tours that take place every Friday.
Daily presentations by local professionals will emphasize the importance of mathematics excellence, self
discipline and academic focus. Scholars wil also learn time management, note taking and research skils. The
college guidance component will focus on A-G requirements and career exploration exercises.
There will be a 1 week residential program at the University of California Riverside, awarded to the top 25
scholars based upon recommendations of program personnel. The recommendation is based upon performance
and attendance. The program will end with a ceremony highlighting successes of the scholars and allowing
parents to hear about achievements made during the summer program.
Referrals from parents, counselors, teachers, principals, school administrators, community leaders and churches are invited. Applications wil be reviewed during April and scholars notified of
their selection by mid-May
