Legacy Roundtable Accelerated Summer Mathematics Academy

Begins Recruitment for 2012 African American Male Summer Scholars

“Why We Won’t Wait”

Legacy Roundtable was inspired to launch the Accelerated Summer Mathematics Academy (ASMA) when the US Department of Education’s 2008 California Progress Report cited African-American 8th grade math proficiency scores in the bottom 18% nationwide. It is widely acknowledged that proficiency in mathematics is an important key in preparation for college admissions. Legacy Roundtable has teamed up again with local colleges and universities, businesses, schools, churches and community based organizations to keep community attention and resources focused on erasing this condition.

Summer 2012 ASMA classes will include a continued focus on Algebra and more challenging math courses through Calculus. Students will take community college level classes that will replace a “full-year” of high school requirement in order to enroll into more rigorous math courses upon return to school in fall 2012. Scholars will be eligible to receive three months of free tutoring in Saturday and Sunday* sessions taught by Legacy Roundtable tutors February through April.

Summer courses last approximately six weeks and are taught by community college professors. Students who complete these classes with passing scores will receive college credits for their work and enroll in more challenging math classes at their high schools during the following fall semester. Student performance and attendance during the February through May period determines who is allowed to proceed through the community college portion of the program.

Scholars get assistance during the February through April period on their current math classes as well as assistance with preparation for the Community College Math Assessment Test. Results of this community college assessment test determine which community college courses a student may enter for credit.

Phase two of the program includes a one-week stay at a residential housing dormitory with all of the “real college” amenities at the University of California’s Riverside or Irvine campuses and will be awarded to ALL scholars who complete summer classes.

Legacy Roundtable has boldly made a commitment based goal of enrolling 500 African American males into Calculus within the Inland Empire and San Gabriel Valley—all in the same year. Legacy pledges to ensure that each of these scholars is competitively eligible for top colleges and universities throughout California and the nation if they continue habits gained through participation and use college preparation guidance provided by Legacy partners. Legacy Roundtable is sponsored by the Council of African American Parents, a non-profit organization.

MEMORANDUM

June 14, 2011

Dear Legacy Scholars and Parents:

Congratulations on completing the initial steps to becoming a bona fide community college student and more importantly a Legacy Scholar. Please join us on Saturday June 18, 2011 from 10AM – Noon at UCR Building 1020 INT for our orientation. At this time you will be able to meet those scholars who will be attending your respective campuses (i.e. Chaffey Rancho, Moreno Valley and Mt. Sac.). In many cases, carpools will benefit parents and scholars; we have scheduled time during this meeting to see where such cooperation is possible.

Please bring all your questions and concerns so that we can hit the ground running on Monday, the first day of class. Once again we are aiming for 100% of the scholars to complete classes with passing grades of A, B or C and will provide the support, encouragement, and daily oversight to make this happen. We are certain we can reach this goal if we all stay focused on the rewards for these scholars.

We will also ask parents to sign travel authorization/release forms for the Friday college and cultural trips during this session. Parent volunteers to chaperone on these college excursions is expected.

Thanks for your dedication and commitment to your son’s academic success.

Sincerely,

Chuck Moore
Legacy Director
